Feedback please...

I've been working hard on a site for the past 3 months. I'd greatly appreciate some feedback both in terms of functionality and design.

themebot.com

Thanks, Sean

    Too many colors.

Stick to a theme, Like using the colors in you Themebot header, use that green instead of the two other greens for the elements in the page. Using the same shades will add some continuity to the design.

Sean- it's a very clean design. From an IA (information architecture) perspective I might suggest a few things:
    - What are the "calls to action"? That is, what do you want the site visitor to do? And the answer to that will depend on your 'business model.' Are you selling themes? What action should the visitor take? For example, I use wordpress (and "94%" of visitors voted for WP on your polls) so I'm looking for themes for those cms's...expecting to see a link like "View WordPress Themes". I might think about having some clearly defined "click paths" to move the visitor into the site.
    - Registration- what will that do for me? tell the visitor why it's beneficial to register.

It's a great start though- good luck!

Hi Ron. Thanks for the input. I am not selling themes. All of the themes that I create and submit on the site will be free, either GNU/GPL or ShareAlike. Eventually there will be a section for professional web designers and developers to promote the services they offer, i.e. custom design, coding, security analysis, database architecture. Also, people who create commercial templates can have their designs featured on the homepage and various places on the site. I'd like to move more towards providing these services as a source of revenue and eliminate the google adsense once there is enough income to support ongoing operations.

As for the "call to action" another visitor mentioned that they didn't know where to begin when they first went to the site. I thought about adding links in the sidebar for each album in the gallery like you mentioned. However, I don't want the left sidebar to get too crowded making it necessary to scroll down a lot to see all of it. Perhaps there is another way to implement this, I think it is a good idea.

The site is very new, so I'm currently testing the waters. I hope this ends up being a useful service for people.

Hi...great site. Lots of elements I like. Not that into the colors in the lettering. More importantly,I would agree that it's a bit difficult to know where to begin when you first get to the site. I believe that's becuase it seems like the rounded corner box titled ThemeBot.com has the Home link in it. All three of those links could be in the blue global nav bar across the top. In a sense it's like there are two global navs as it stands now. My suggestions would be to incorporate those three elements into the global nav, and remove that box. The next one under it, New Themes, is very self-explanitory and obvious. (It should be on the gallery page as well, but it's currently not.) You could bump the New Themes box up, to replace the ThemeBot.com box, or fill the space with something that doesn't look anything like a navigation cue.

I would suggest that the member log in be at the top on the right side (that's where they are often found), or in the very top right corner where the beveled search feature is, but that would leave only New Themes and News on the right. So...since I don't personally enjoy three column layout (I feel it squishes the centre content too much and makes the whole site feel crowded and chaotic), my more severe suggestion would be to eliminate the left column. The progress report in the centre isn't a real head-turner for looks, so maybe consider putting a short sentence about what the site is for, followed by the new themes with a few screen shots for appealing visuals and as an aid for the viewer to see immediately what the site is about. The 'news' element currently appears twice, and even if they aren't the same, there should only be one 'news' section.

Eliminating the left column would allow a lot more freedom in the main viewing area for screenshots of new themes, or "most popular" or whatever, but more importantly, it would leave a single dominant global nav. to guide people into the site. It's more important that a table of contents, and its an immediate indication of how easy the site will be to navigate.

I do like it though. I like the background rectangles with sublte lines and drop shadows, I like the green, would have to strongly agree with MamaLoca's advice. Stick to one type of color, earth tones or primarys or something...check this out : kuler.adobe.com/ I'd stick with colors similar in value to the green on the tabs. Nice work all in all!

A lot of good advice here. The Home link could definitely be moved to the top navbar. I want to keep the other links there as this is going to become a member control panel. There will be several other entries added in the future and to have them all in the top would not fit.

I didn't put the Member Login in the right column because I want to be able to collapse that column when visiting the Gallery, so it is easy to see more themes on a single page. Perhaps the login should be moved to the top of the column. I just didn't want it taking up too much space for new visitors.

I've gotten a few comments about the site name logo. Perhaps it is time to change it. What about making it all black or all dark blue like the top navbar?

The progress report is going to be replaced with featured themes once I start to add subscriptions for this.

I've already made a few changes you suggested. Thanks.

        That's good to know-
Again, putting on my IA hat I would suggest that you take a little time and write down those different roles you just mentioned and a little bit about what they might need on your site.
        For example:
        > professional web designers: probably want to see themes listed by platform/cms or by type (business, portfolio, non-profit, etc.), a place to list their services, upload their logo, etc.
        > template creators: how do they upload and promote their templates?
        > developer: where do I tell you that I work with drupal and can customize any template you buy?

so, thinking about what these different visitors want to do will help you then determine the types of links you need to guide them to the conversion point (from being just a casual visitor to being a contributor/downloader/advertiser/etc.).

        Good luck!
